This article was originally published in the Journal of the Genealogical Society of Ireland (2021) Vol. 22 pp 55-58 with a link to a website containing the detailed records. However, this website has now closed. This article provides all of the detailed records.
The Catholic Church register of births and marriages of Rathangan, Co. Wexford starts in 1803, but there is a gap in the records from June 1806 to the end of 1813. These records are available on-line on the National Library of Ireland site (1). Additional records for the period 1807-1811 were found by the author in the Franciscan Library in Killiney, Co. Dublin. This library holds extensive records of the activities of various Irish Franciscan communities in Ireland. These include records from the Wexford parish of Killanerin and Gorey for the period 1783-1807, which will be published separately. The probable reason for the notebook being in the Franciscan library is that, although a monastic order, the Franciscans provided parish clergy for some of county Wexford until the 1840s (2). They therefore maintained some church records. This notebook could be a remnant from this period.
The new records are in a simple uncovered priest's notebook (Reference Ms. C 104). The notebook details baptisms, marriages, anointings, payment of dues, provision of certificates, and also ‘offerings on the altar’. In total there are records of 230 baptisms, 46 marriages and 59 anointings. It is written in a shorthand rough style in date order. The notebook bears all the signs of significant use, and much of the writing is illegible from a combination of wear, fading of the ink and ingrained dirt (See Figs 1 and 2). The content reflects the work of a priest as he travelled around his extensive parish performing sacraments and conducting other church business. At this period priests commonly travelled to the homes of parishioners. This was a necessary function as many parishes had no church at the time, and travel was more difficult for the sick or new-born. It was not until after the Synod of Thurles in 1850 that baptism at a font in a church became mandatory. Before this, baptism and marriage commonly took place in the priest’s house or in the family home.

Whether there was a church building in the parish at this time is not clear. Rathangan parish also covered the civil parishes of Kilmannon, Cleariestown and Duncormuck or Duncormick. A Catholic church was built in Duncormick in 1816 (3) but there may also have been a church elsewhere in this extensive parish. In 1807 the Catholic Church was still re-emerging from the repression of the Penal Laws, and Wexford was also suffering from the aftermath of the 1798 Rebellion in which many Catholic churches had been destroyed. The chapel at Newtown in this parish was one of those burned (4).

An obvious question is whether the content of the notebook represents the complete parish records for these years, or only a subset. To assess this, the average number of services per year in the 'new' records was compared with those in the existing set of records on the NLI site. The records for 1806 and 1807 are incomplete and not useful as comparators. The NLI records for 1805 show 34 baptisms and 15 marriages, while the new 1808 records reported here show 50 baptisms and 11 marriages, which is generally comparable. The extent of baptisms would definitely suggest that this is a full record for the year. Another way to consider this is how many priests were in the parish? In 1822, an account by a local teacher states that there were only two priests (5) which suggests that this was a major proportion of the services conducted.
The names of those married or baptised would usually have been transcribed from this notebook into the main register when the priest returned to his base. However, for some reason this was not done. These record-keeping practices are detailed in 'Irish Church Records' (6). The legible records from the parish have been transcribed from the notebook and are listed below.
Some further points on the notebook format and content:
Format. the records are shown per month (as in the original). For example, a December 1807 record is below. This shows the baptism of Cate Larkin, daughter of Thomas and Ann Larkin on 11 December. The god-parents are Nick Chaill (possibly Cahill) and Judy Larkin. Marriages are in a similar format with witnesses indicated as 'Tesrs' (testators).
11 Bapd. Cate of Ths. & Ann Larkin
Ss. Nick Chaill? and Judy Larkin
Author: entries were made by different priests at various times, but predominantly by one person (based on the handwriting). This is likely to have been Rev. James Dake who was the curate in the parish until 1830. His name appears regularly as a witness on these records, suggesting that he 'doubled' as a witness when required. It was not the Parish Priest, who at this time was Patrick Codd (7). This is because (a) settlement of the accounts with the parish priest is referenced at regular intervals; and (b) the death of Patrick Codd is recorded in the notebook in 1810.
Accounts & Receipts: Although fees received are recorded in the notebook, they are not transcribed in the list below (with minor exceptions). Each service (apart from most anointings) attracted a fee. Receipts from 'Offerings' (by which is meant the 'plate' at mass etc.) and dues (i.e. regular payments from parishioners for upkeep of the church) are recorded. There are also 12 records of certificates being provided, presumably of . At regular intervals the income is calculated, and a note is made that the accounts have been 'settled', presumably with the parish priest. For example in May 1808 is the entry 'In all on ye 30 May 1808 £2.13.6'.
Anointings: Anointings are rarely recorded in Catholic church registers, so it is probable that the priest was not concerned with recording the precise details in these cases. As a probable consequence, the 59 records of anointings are sometimes heartlessly vague, e.g. 'Anted. The woman on ye mountain' (Nov 1808); or 'a little boy in Gurtins' or 'Jno. Lamport’s Mother-in-law' and they are often not dated. However, the fee received is often reported (see accounts below). As anointing is an indication of impending death, some of these records may be of genealogical relevance.
Abbreviations: As is usual in private notebooks, abbreviations are widely used but most are understandable: Bapd. = baptised; Antd. or Anted. = anointed; Do. = 'the same' (as above or as foregoing); Ss. = Sponsors; tesrs = testators; Recd. = received. Fairly obvious abbreviations are also used for names: Jams. =James; Jno = John; Ths. = Thomas; Wm = William; Elenr. = Eleanor. Anty is a short name commonly used for Anastatia.
Spelling and Name forms: The author does not use standard spelling forms. For instance, he uses Dewes for dues in some places. Spellings of first names are also unusual e.g. Jone for Joan, Keate or Cate for Kate. Double letters are rarely used in names, thus we get Bidy, Saly, Pegy, Kity, Pady, Maty etc. but 'Patt' is used. Other names are also spelled in unusual ways, e.g. first name Chatrina, which is presumably a form of Caitriona or Catherine. Among family names we find Donaly for Donnelly; O Nale (probably) for O'Neill; Dayly for Daly; Jurden for (probably) Jordan; and Lamport for Lambert. Rossiter is also spelled in several different ways: Rosster, Rositer and Roseter. Note also two unusual first names: Mogue and Mon. Mogue is found quite commonly in the Southeast. The most commonly occurring family names are: Furlong (55 occurrences), Welsh or Walsh (33); Codd (26); Sinnot or Synnot (25); Whitty (24), Stafford (16) ; Hays (14); and Cogley or Cogly (11).
Document quality. The record is illegible in parts (see Fig. 2 ) and these are indicated as 'illegible' or '.....' where they occur. A small proportion, particularly in the later years, is relatively easily read. The entries below are provided on a best effort basis. Conservation of the document would reveal further names and provide clarification of others.
Placenames: Many records include townlands of residence, often abbreviated and generally not spelled in the currently accepted form. Where the places could be identified the current forms are suggested. The Catholic parish covered all or part of the Civil Parishes of Duncormick, Kilmannan, Duncormick, Killag and Ambrosetown.
My thanks to the Franciscan order for access to their records and for permission to publish the results.
